Is orthokeratology (OK lens) really worth it?
Orthokeratology (a.k.a. OK lens) is a non-surgical, reversible eyesight correction regime that best fits adults unsuitable for laser refractive surgery, such as LASIK and SMILE, and children whose eyes are still actively growing. It can free you from eyeglasses wearing so that you can play sports, including ball games, swimming, or even diving without any constraint. And to certain people, it might even boost their self-confidence by freeing them from the stupid-looking thick lenses due to their highly myopic prescription!
The concept of the OK lens was mentioned in ancient Chinese literature. It was said that soldiers would keep pressing their eyes with sandbags when sleeping at night, and the next day they would see like a charm for distance and their arrow shooting would become a lot more accurate!!
The International Myopia Institute (IMI) proposes orthokeratology a safe and effective myopia control regime for children. Effective myopia control is certainly a good way to promote the long-term eye health of children, as scientific research has clearly shown that high myopia is associated with much elevated risk of developing sight-threatening eye diseases such as myopic maculopathy, retinal detachment, and glaucoma!
So what do you think now?
